Reaction to BBC Broadcast on Shore Road

We were very disappointed but not altogether surprised that the BBC chose to focus on NIMBYism and property values in their item on Shore Road as part of the Politics Show programme.

Several local residents were interviewed as was our own Richard Salvin. They spoke about the damage that this project is doing to Perth as a whole and as a tourist destination, as well as the wider environmental and transport issues.

Because this is a beautiful part of Perth and we are privileged to live here we are open to accusations of "Not In My Back Yard" but a moment's reflection will lead to the realisation that we have Perth's only needle exchange for drug users, two homes for youngsters moving out of care, a school for children with problems and are to have a shelter for homeless families and a Medium Secure Unit for some of the most dangerous people in Scotland. We are not saying that we should not have these institutions nor provide help to the greater community but we should not be viewed as playing no part.

The Shore Road Waste to Energy facility will blight the whole of Perth and a good deal of Perthshire. We are not fighting it only on our own behalf. It just happens that we have members who are very aware of what is happening in the city and after the Murray Royal Hospital campaign we are geared up to take action on anything which affects our community (albeit as well as others).

We shall continue to try, with the help and support of our M.P. Pete Wishart, to get the bigger message across.
