Consultation on Houses on Monastery Ground

Cala Homes (East) Ltd. is to hold a public consultation at St Mary's Monastery on Friday 30th October from 2p.m. to 7p.m. and Saturday 31st from 10a.m. to 3p.m.. All are welcome to attend.

Cala Homes (East) Ltd intends to apply for planning permission for residential development. It wishes to build 24 up-market houses on the  sloping land to the east of the monastery (off Hatton Road), a Perth beauty spot which is currently NOT zoned for housing. It is an area of great landscape value and was designated as green belt in the 2004 draft local plan (although this was never formally adopted).

Graham & Sibbald agents for Cala Homes state “ The fundamental driver behind this proposal and its main justification, is to permit the completion of the project and modernisation of this listed building. It would create a property fund and ensure the long term future of the congregation. Failure to secure these funds will undoubtedly result in the Trustees having to vacate the monastery and it will fall into disrepair".

While we sympathise with the Monastery's financial problems we remain opposed to any further encroachment onto Kinnoull Hill. We think that this development will negatively affect the approach to and outlook from Kinnoull Hill, will ruin the setting of the listed buildings, will add to congestion on narrow roads, increase danger to pedestrians and cyclists and put further strain on infrastructure.

You can obtain further information from CALA's agents, Graham and Sibbald, at planning@g-s.co.uk and should make comments by email or by post to Graham and Sibbald, 18 Newton Place, Glasgow G3 7PY.

You can also make your views known to us or to your Local Councillors.
